Professional Bio

Mary Margaret Chren, MD, is the Chair of the Department of Dermatology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She came to Vanderbilt in 2018 as the inaugural Robert N. and Rachelle Buchanan and A.H. and Lucile Lancaster Chair in Dermatology.

She attended Smith College; after medical school at Yale, she completed residencies in Internal Medicine at Stanford and in Dermatology at University Hospitals in Cleveland. She trained in research in clinical epidemiology, and has an active research program focused on the measurement and improvement of complex health outcomes such as patients' experience of illness. 

Dr. Chren's research group developed Skindex, a widely used skin-related quality-of-life tool. She headed the Program for Clinical Research in Dermatology at UCSF, where she was Professor of Dermatology.
